 U.S. ground forces take the lead in the battle as the allied fighting force
grows to 2,000. Seven U.S. soldiers are killed in a firefight after enemy
rocket-propelled grenade fire downs an MH-47 Chinook helicopter and forces
a second to land. Seven U.S. soldiers are killed. Allied Afghan fighters
encounter fierce resistance from the Taliban and al-Qaeda forces, whose
number includes Arabs, Uzbeks and Chechens.
