As the enemy fighting force appears larger than expected, 300 additional U.S. troops are called in, taking the Americans' total presence to 1,200. Allied soldiers are converging on the mountain range, and may have killed as many as 800 al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters. The concentration of enemy fighters leads to media speculation over whether Osama bin Laden may be nearby, but U.S. officials play down such speculation.
