ZOLOFT
For 5% of menstruating women, their time of the month can be particularly draining, both emotionally and physically. Those who suffer from premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a severe form of premenstrual syndrome, are often so debilitated by feelings of sadness and anxiety or changes in their sleeping and eating habits that they become withdrawn and irritable. Now there's help. The FDA has approved one of the more popular antidepressants, Zoloft, for treating PMDD. The drug relieves PMDD by keeping brain nerves bathed in the chemical serotonin. Zoloft has an advantage over other therapies that have been tried, such as hormones or psychotherapy: it's the only one that has been studied in-depth in clinical trials.
