Why Did Jesus Die?
Mel Gibson's movie has thrust this powerful question back at the center of Holy Week

The Good vs. Evil Theory
By incarnation, death and Resurrection, Christ triumphs over Satan and rescues humanity from evil
The Paying-a-Debt Theory
Christ sacrificed himself to make amends for sins against God
The Role-Model Theory
By his example, Christ inspires people to live in obedience to God's ways

How do you interpret the Crucifixion?

Christ's death is a sign of empathy for human suffering
Christ's death was necessary to cleanse humanity's sins
The real focus should be Christ's love and compassion, not his death

[The] emphasis was on how Christ's life and death relates to human beings instead of how it relates to remedying God's justice."
