For months afterward, plagued by a constant ringing in one ear, he tormented himself over his first reaction to the explosion that threw him 15 feet onto his back. "I knew my friend was in the building,'' he says, choking up. "Your heart is saying, 'Get him out. He wouldn't leave you.' But your mind is saying, 'No way.' So you feel guilty."
