SEPTEMBER 15, 1997 SPECIAL REPORT: PRINCESS DIANA, 1961-1997 BRITS HOT ON 'CANDLE' After being on sale for less than 48 hours, Elton John's "Candle in the Wind '97" tribute to Princess Diana shot straight to No. 1 on Sunday's British singles chart. By Saturday, shoppers had bought all 600,000 available copies, setting a new record for the fastest-selling single in Britain. The CD is set to go on sale in the U.S. on Tuesday. DIANA STAMP LICKED Queen Elizabeth has nixed a British postage stamp that would have commemorated her late ex-daughter-in-law, says London's Sun tabloid. "It is thought the queen's advisers warned her against the idea," a Royal Mail source told the paper, "saying it would be better to cool the public mourning for Diana rather than see another surge of interest." Diana and the queen reputedly had a very chilly relationship. DIANA AND THE TOURISTS Princess Diana's final route has become a new Parisian tourist attraction, Reuters reports. City tour buses are now cruising the same streets as the Mercedes-Benz that carried Diana, companion Dodi Al Fayed and driver Henri Paul to their deaths in the Pont d'Alma tunnel, and tourists are congregating on the Alma bridge above the crash scene. Most tour operators denied they were exploiting the tragedy, but others insisted they were just meeting tourists' demands to visit the site. |
