SEPTEMBER 19, 1997 SPECIAL REPORT: PRINCESS DIANA, 1961-1997 DIANA FOR NOBEL PRIZE Tony Cunningham, a member of Britain's governing Labor Party, is trying to persuade fellow European lawmakers to nominate Princess Diana's campaign against land mines for the Nobel Peace Prize, reports the Associated Press. The U.S. Senate has already nominated Canada's Foreign Minister, Lloyd Axworthy, for this year's prize for his work to ban land mines. Anti-land mine groups have also been nominated. Yet says Cunningham: "When someone of Princess Diana's stature joined the campaign, it gave it a huge boost. It would have taken us years to get that sort of publicity. She did an incredible job and played a crucial part in the whole campaign." |
