Forest fires are common in the Bitterroot National Forest, but rarely have conditions for combustion been this favorable. A mild winter left little snow pack, and persistent dry and windy weather sapped moisture from the pine and mixed conifer forest that surrounds the Bitterroot Valley. The most troublesome fire in the area was at Spade Creek.
