"Don't push me, 'cause I'm close to the edge, I'm trying not to lose my head..." Hip-hop started out as happy party music. Grandmaster Flash's "The Message" signaled to a wider audience that black life in America was not one big party, and that hip-hop could be social criticism even while it was making money.
