First in the Nation: Voters in Dixville Notch, N.H., cast the first ballots in the U.S. for the presidential election at midnight on November 7. Seventeen people cast votes in person, and with an additional 10 absentee ballots, the final tally put GOP candidate George W. Bush in first place over Democratic candidate Al Gore, 21 to 5. Green party candidate Ralph Nader took a single vote.
