Like Father, Like Son
BY OWEN THOMAS

What would we do without early adopters like this pair? They're the first to buy the latest, greatest toys--not because they need them, but, well, just because they're there.

1 PC-100 HandyCam, Sony, $2,099. It's sleek, shoots in the dark and fits in a coat pocket.

2 NeoPoint 1000, NeoPoint, $400. Forget simply staying connected; you've got to be wired too. With Sprint PCS's Wireless Web service, this cell phone doubles as a browser.

3 Visor, Handspring, $199. Entrepreneurs share a bond with PalmPilot designer Jeff Hawkins. His latest invention, the Visor, has add-on Springboards that make this pda a Swiss Army Knife for geeks.

4 Cyborg 3D Stick, Saitek, $69.95. Programmable, customizable and adjustable to any hand, this joystick is a hacker's delight.

5 Cool Athlon 900, KryoTech, $2,200; Artica 17.3" LCD, Miro Displays, $2,799. KryoTech's special cooling technology bumps up this amd-based PC's clock speed an additional 200 MHz--just the thing if you're looking to clean Dad's clock on a networked game of Quake.

6 Vaio PCG-N505VE, Sony, $1,700. On the road, a cheap, lightweight laptop is all you need. A 2.7-lb. Sony fits the bill.
