BIO A year ago, the U.S. Department of Commerce tapped Esther Dyson to be the chair
pro tem of the Internet Corp. for Assigned Names and Numbers, a nonprofit given
the unenviable task of figuring out how to award domain names--all those .coms,
.nets, and .orgs. The problem: Network Solutions had been doing the job since
1993 and didn't want to give it up. War ensued, with Congress debating whether
ICANN--which tried to impose a buck- per-domain fee to fund its regulatory
activities--was "out of control." (Republican Representative Thomas Bliley of
Virginia, whose district neighbors Network Solutions, led the charge against
ICANN.) Dyson defended ICANN's neutrality and, when the nonprofit faced
bankruptcy, raised $650,000 in donations from MCI WorldCom and Cisco.
FORWARD TILT After she leaves the A board, Dyson will remain an industry
influencer-- especially through her prestigious PC Forum. A director of
advertising firm WPP Group, she plans to call for consumer-friendly marketing on
the Net.
