Nineteen ninety-eight was a big year for the underdog. Steve Jobs returned to Apple, and Apple returned to profitability; Linux made a serious bid for respectability; and everybody and their assistant attorney general took on the biggest billionaire of them all, Bill Gates.
The year brought a few things that we knew were inevitable. The stock market
got bigger. More people shopped online. Y2K is now a year closer.
And a few things we thought were going to happen didn't quite make it....
