The Battleground States

In most elections, the list of swing states that either candidate could win shrinks as election day approaches. But with just days left, the national polls are still a statistical tie and more states seem to be coming into play. The ultimate proof—Dick Cheney is spending 14 hours flying to Hawaii and back the Sunday before the election because two polls show the Aloha state is close. The Democrats are countering with Al Gore and Alexandra Kerry. Michigan, which both sides thought was out of reach for Bush, is a tossup again. Indicators hint that Arkansas and West Virginia, which Kerry had given up on, could still be up for grabs. So Bush and Kerry leap from region to region and the parties focus on turnout. Many voters are going early—23 states allow voting before Election Day, and lines have been stretching down the block at polling places in Florida. But whose supporters will show up?
