I in the Sky

If email from the Autobahn is not mobile enough for you, Boeing this year will roll out its new Connexions internet service which will let you surf from the skies. Satellites over the continental U.S. and the North Atlantic provide connections speeds of about 56kps -- similar to your standard modem at home -- for carriers flying U.S. and transatlantic routes. Just plug your laptop into your seat's data port and you have access to the Internet, flight information, and even live streaming video and audio. Boeing's network gives you free access to flight information, destination guides and shopping, or basically everything that's already available in the seat pocket in front of you. You'll have to pay for surfing the web and watching CNN -- and probably pay through the nose, as airborne telecommunications still don't come cheap. In light of this, Boeing is targeting corporate clients heavily; you can charge your online session to your company's account, and even use the network to access your corporate intranet.
