Myers' extensive experience designing operating systems and managing technology companies should help him establish the Symbian EPOC platform as the operating system of choice for the next-generation mobile devices, which combine the capabilities of computers and telephones. Microsoft is emerging as a fierce potential rival but Symbian has plenty of clout of its own, with Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, Psion and Matsushita (Panasonic) as owners. Symbian technology is the power behind Ericsson's newly released R380 World smart phone, for example, which functions as mobile phone, personal digital assistant and wireless Internet access device. Once more products incorporating EPOC are shipped and market conditions improve, Myers says Symbian will launch an initial public offering.
The vision thing: "We aim to become the predominant platform in the market."
Forward spin: EPOC does have a shot at becoming the operating system of the future, but watch out for Microsoft.
