Imagine you’re a systems engineer and can handle traffic over your network access link as easily as a street cop directs pedestrians, cars and trucks.

If the boss is planning a video conference you could assure that his needs are waved into the fast lane, guaranteeing plenty of bandwidth and good service.

That’s essentially what Després introduced at September’s Interop trade show in Paris. His StreamGroomer Service — with boxes installed on both ends of a network — is one of the few products that efficiently prioritizes traffic while making it easy to change parameters.

Such bandwidth-optimization equipment could be a $2.5 billion business by 2005, as corporate customers shift from conventional telephone service to Internet Protocol (IP) networks.

The Vision Thing: "The ability to prioritize traffic will allow corporate customers to make the best use of access links, which would leverage their network investment and lower overhead."

Forward Spin: StreamCore will face plenty of competition, but industry experts say they are impressed by its management.
