Martikainen has always been ahead of his time. Working at VTT, a research institute in Espoo, Finland, he developed a router that streams data from one computer to another.
That was in 1982, four years before Cisco commercialized similar technology. At Nokia (1985-88), he was a pioneer of GSM technology. Now a professor of telecom architectures at the Helsinki University of Technology, Martikainen is working on fourth-generation wireless services before the third generation is even introduced.
NECSOM, a firm he created four years ago, makes routers to manage streaming media, while his Mobile Internet Communications Services develops fourth-generation services to run on NECSOM's hardware.
The vision thing: "Efficient methods and tools for context-sensitive customer and service management are a research and development area that will enable new mobile and wireless Internet services."
Forward Spin: Fourth-generation services are still far off, but Martikainen plans a trial in Finland next year.
