ARCHITECTURE
Casa de Musica, Oporto
Koolhaas' unrealized plans to create a hideaway for a man terrified of the Y2K bug transmogrified into a 12-floor haven for music mavens. From its angular, rocklike exterior, Koolhaas hollowed out a 1,500-seat auditorium, a 350-seat chamber music hall and a "cybermusic" center, among other facilities. Much of the façade is glass, including the front and rear walls of both auditoriums, which overlook the city, a European Capital of Culture during 2001. Another glass wall separates the halls. Nothing to shy away from.
