Still All the Rage
With Eminem everywhere in 2001, expect music and mayhem as hip-hop's most mesmerising voice continues its splenetic and fascinating dialogue with America. His critics and the accompanying moral panic all point to a shift in pop culture on the scale of Elvis Presley or the Sex Pistols. Next month, Eminem will get an ecstatic reception for his sellout European tour and win a couple of Grammys. But soon after, two court appearances for assault will be painful grist to his mill. The times they are a-changin', as Bob Dylan sang. And Dylan, who's still touring and picking up Grammy nominations, would understand the Eminem phenomenon. When he turns 60 in May we'll be fussing over him in bios, parties, new songs and a few of the old ones that never fade: "... Don't criticize what you can't understand/Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command."
