Baby, You Are A Star!
There is no escaping our fascination with ourselves. In 2001 everyone gets famous
BY LAUREN GOLDSTEIN
if there's a limit to our newfound fascination with ourselves, 2001 will be the year we test it. The success of last year's Big Brother programs in Europe and the U.S. means TV executives spent the holidays coming up with myriad ways to exploit our voyeuristic instincts. Watch as hired tempters try to seduce people in committed relationships! Watch as a new pop band struggles to achieve fame! And, please, pay no attention to the dearth of more imaginative alternatives. What can you expect? 2001 was exciting back in 1968 when Stanley Kubrick made his movie. Now that the big year is here, we are watching each other in the toilet. But the cult of the individual has freed city planners to commission amazing and unique buildings. And in fashion the relentless retro march leaves us free to wear what we like. As it should be. After all, now we are the stars.
