China will hardly feel the slowdown in the Year of the Snake. First, the country is not as technology-dependent as other Asian exporters, like Korea and Taiwan, so it remains largely unaffected by the tech sell-off in the U.S. Second, China's pragmatic leaders are considering a number of measures to create a social safety net because of likely job losses at state-run firms. That translates into more retirement funds and insurance offered by the private sector, and the rapid development of a robust equity culture to tap into the country's huge savings.   next
