CHANGING FORTUNES
Italy Awakes
Corporate restructuring in Italy has been slowed by the near-monopoly on investment banking of secretive, Milan-based Mediobanca. That grip ended with the death of its no-nagenarian chairman Enrico Cuccia last year, and already a slew of American banks have increased their presence in Italy. Likely result: a major speedup of restructuring among Italy's corporate sector, with foreign companies the clients of those American banks trolling for bargains. Expect some big cross-border deals involving Italy, especially in the banking sector.
