CHANGING FORTUNES
Japan Opens
Last year saw some high-profile bankruptcies in Japan, but these had little impact on share prices. With U.S. and other foreign investors taking a more active role in Japanese firms, expect to see more of them being forced to open up their books with U.S.-style accounting standards that will make it easier for shareholders to determine whether they are getting a raw deal. "Value-added" will be the catch phrase of 2001.
