Last year merger and acquisition activity set new records worldwide, with icons like AOL and Time Warner, Vodafone and Mannesmann getting hitched. The currency of most mergers was either shares or borrowed money, especially low-quality "junk" bonds. Those tools have been blunted by the decline in world stock and bond markets, so merger activity will slow considerably.   next
