THE MIDEAST
The Intifadeh Goes Radical
The rebellion launched last September by activists from Yasser Arafat's Fateh party will become the battlefield of Islamists from Hamas and fundamentalist militia from the Lebanese Hizballah, which will invite war by stepping up attacks along Israel's northern border. Arafat will rein in Fateh gunmen and peace talks with Israel will resume, but won't yield a final deal. Ehud Barak faces near certain defeat in elections; and the coalition government that succeeds him will be crippled by infighting over the peace process.
