Bush Asks Top Aides: "Are we sure we don't want another recount?"
Nobody said it would be easy. Having won the Presidency by the providence of one measly Supreme Court vote, George W. Bush in his first year in office will confront a minefield of crises at home and abroad. During the campaign, Bush cast himself as a political centrist with a talent for consensus building. He then appointed the most conservative Cabinet since Richard Nixon's. Lingering antagonism from a bruising fight over John Ashcroft, Bush's right-wing choice for Attorney General, will prompt Senate Democrats to frustrate Bush's dramatic tax-cut plan. They will agree to targeted middle-class reductions and will approve increased funding for a national missile defense system. Colin Powell will assure European allies that the U.S. will keep its troops in the Balkans for now. But all eyes will be on Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill, who will be asked to save the world from a global recession. George W. is sure his Dad told him it wouldn't be this hard.   next
