The PC is dead, long live the extended PC. The new device won't replace personal computers, it will complement them, which is why giants like Intel are now branching into MP3 players and Web access pads. This year at least 50% of computers shipped to consumers will come with powerful Pentium 4 processors, making them able to deliver audio and video throughout the home and edit, manage and store content from Web appliances. On sale soon: wireless networking devices like Intel's AnyPoint that will help link home PCs and Web appliances. These will compete with Bluetooth, a new technology that allows devices to communicate in a 10-m radius.   next
