THE NEW NEW THINGS
Wireless Communications
The runaway success of Japanese mobile phone operator DoCoMo's i-mode service is partly due to its packet technology. This year Europe, the U.S. and the rest of Asia will get services based on a similar technology General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) leading to the introduction of always-on Internet, flat-rate pricing and a new standard for Wireless Access Protocol (WAP), making the phones easier to use. But revenues from new data services won't be enough to recoup the huge amounts paid for third-generation mobile licenses in Europe, forcing operators to make tough market choices.
