'Beautiful,' 'Black' or 'Bedroom'?
Who will be who at the Oscars

In this year’s Oscar race, the toughest competition among films of quality will be in a new category: Animated Feature. Members of the Motion Picture Academy will probably choose Shrek over the slightly more deserving Monsters, Inc. The big question: Which other film will make the final list (of just three)? Probably Richard Linklater’s artsy, digitized chat-athon, Waking Life.

Now for the minor awards. Best Picture nominees could be A Beautiful Mind, Black Hawk Down, Gosford Park, In the Bedroom and The Lord of the Rings. DreamWorks’ marketing muscle could make Shrek a finalist in this category.

Best Actor. Golden Globe winner Russell Crowe will impress voters not just with his sensitive turn in A Beautiful Mind but with his switch from his burly-brooding turn in Gladiator. This could be Denzel Washington’s year as the conniving cop in Training Day. Will Smith (Ali) will compete with Billy Bob Thornton, who’s competing with himself: Monster’s Ball or The Man Who Wasn’t There?

Best Actress. Sissy Spacek (In the Bedroom) and Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball) have the buzz thing goin’. Nicole Kidman (The Others? Moulin Rouge?) will get points for surviving post-Tom. And the Dame Judi Dench slot will go to ... Dame Judi Dench (Iris).

Of course we already know who’ll win; we’re that good. But we’ll keep you guessing until after the nominations are announced Feb. 12.
