From New York
Miguel Adrover's moneyed moment
By LAUREN GOLDSTEIN
With no money but a lot of good friends behind him, Miguel Adrover turned out a fall collection last February that showed just how ingenious a fashion genius can be. It starred a coat made from the mattress cover of his friend and neighbor Quentin Crisp, a vintage Burberry raincoat twisted back-to-front into a dress, a bunch of Burberry scarves sewn into a poncho and a series of sweaters knitted by hand by a childhood friend. The show got him rave reviews and a financial backer he was the first to sign on with Pegasus Apparel Group. Pegasus promptly sent him to Italy to gasp! buy fabrics for his next collection.
At his show in New York, Adrover showed well-cut private-schoolgirl suits, trim military uniforms, soft chiffon dresses. No one could say the clothes weren't beautiful. "The buyers were salivating," said a fashion editor. "But it lacked a certain wit that he had when he had $5 dollars to his name and was forced to rely more on his creativity." Still, Adrover is on his way.
