In the 1950s and '60s, there was no shorter route from a British father's wallet to his son's heart than a Scalextric slot-car racing set. This Christmas, Hornby the company that owns Scalextric hopes to usher the slot car into the Internet age. The new Sport World System connects users' track layouts to the Internet so they can compete with fellow racers around the world. At the heart of the kit, expected to cost in the region of €150, is a control unit to collect the telemetric data of your car's performance and feed it through the Net (a 56K modem will suffice) to up to seven other competitors. Owners of Scalextric and compatible tracks can log in at www.scalextricsportworld.com to compete on prescribed track layouts. If keeping one eye on the road and one on the screen is just too tough, remember that's what Dads are for.
