Armed UNITA soldiers, Gamba: The UNITA guerilla has known war, and only war, for 30 years. He has raised his children in the bush, taught them how to fight and how to survive on virtually nothing. Now a new era is dawning. The desire for a lasting peace can be found on both sides of the conflict. Democratic elections have not been held for 10 years; new elections are due in late 2003 or early 2004. The incumbent president José Eduardo Dos Santos has already said he will not stand for reelection.
