Summer of Sorrow
Bombings and assassinations shake Spain

A series of bombings and assassinations have turned Spain's summer into a season of mourning. The attacks, all attributed to the Basque separatist group ETA, have killed eight people and injured more than 30 others. Casualties have included young children, an army officer, government officials, businessmen, and even four ETA members who were believed to have been transporting a bomb when it accidentally exploded.
ETA's violent push for Basque independence has escalated since the group ended a unilateral ceasefire last December. But the Spanish government has so far refused to budge from its hard-line no-negotiation stance.
