Criticised by the world for what it sees as doing no more than tackling terror and fighting for its very existence, Israel battles with fear and grief

Tuesday, Apr. 23, 2002: A unidentified mourner comforts a woman who burst into tears during the funeral procession for Nir Kritsman, an Israeli naval officer, in the northern Israeli town of Hadera. Kritsman, 22, died the previous day when, says the Israeli army, two gunmen opened fire during his patrol in the outskirts of the northern West Bank town of Nablus. The patrol charged the militants in the incident, killing them both.
