DIMITRI BELYAKOV for TIME
Tiblisi, Georgia: Georgia's Minister of Defense David Tevadze, relaxes in his government office. Tevadze admitted in an interview that the U.S. announcement of an al-Qaeda presence in the Pankisi Gorge came as somewhat of a surprise. The Pankisi however is a well-known hide-out for rebels from next-door Chechnya and — according to European sources — has become a significant staging post for the naufacture and export of heroin from Afghanistan.
