Lost Fortuyn
A nation known for its tolerance mourns for a leader with extreme views

Monday, May 6, 2002: Police detain a man after the fatal shooting of Pim Fortuyn, later identified as environmental and animal rights activist, Volkert van der Graaf. In addition to finding ammunition in his home that matched shell casings found at the crime scene, prosecutors said van der Graaf may have been plotting against other members of Fortuyn's party. The names of three of them, along with maps of their neighborhoods, were reportedly found in the suspect's car.
