From Kiri to Ozzy, Martinu To Boo-Choo

ISTANBUL: For its 30th International Music Festival, the city finds perfect pitch with a class lineup and stunning venues. High notes this year: Kiri Te Kanawa sings Strauss, Gidon Kremer plays Piazzolla and the Bang On A Can All-Stars defy expectation.

BRATISLAVA: Some 15 km out of town on the banks of the Danube stands the Danubiana-Meulensteen Art Museum — a ship-shaped home to local and international contemporary art. Its summer exhibition includes work by Spanish painter Miguel Ybañez.

KRAKOW: Almost expunged in the Holocaust, the return of Jewish life to the district of Kazimierz is celebrated in the Jewish Culture Festival. Drawing on the artistic wells of Israel and New York, this year's program includes concerts from renowned cantors Benzion Miller, Yaacov Motzen and Israel Rand, workshops on cooking and Hasidic dancing and wild Klezmer on every corner.

BUDAPEST: The word búcsú translates as absolution and farewell. The Budapest Búcsú (pro-nounced boo-choo) festival celebrates the depar-ture of the last Soviet soldier from Hungarian soil in 1991, and every year it translates into a full-on party, rock festival and carnival that sprawls across the city's squares, parks and concert halls and costs not a single forint.

BREGENZ: The floating stage on Lake Constance is now the flagship of the Bregenz Festival. Last year's giant café for La Bohème from Richard Jones and Antony Mc-Donald was so popular it's back again. Too popular? Then try Bohuslav Martinu's psycho-dramatic opera Julietta at the Festival Opera House.
July 17-Aug. 18 tel: +43 5574 407 6 www.bregenzerfestspiele.com

SOZOPOL: The annual Apollonia Festival staged in this 16th century resort on the Black Sea is a showcase for the best in Bulgarian arts. Adding an edge this year is Marius Kurkinsky, an openly gay pop icon in what's still a conservative culture. Actor-playwright-director Kurkinsky premieres his Chekhov-inspired play Little Comedies with the Plovdiv Theater.
