Marc Chagall grew up in a Jewish community in Vitebsk, Russia and spent a good portion of his life in Paris. He began working on his Bible illustrations at the urging of Ambroise Vollard, the Parisian art dealer and publisher. All of Chagall's Bible illustrations represented here were originally published in 1960 in a double issue of Verve.All illustrations are copyright 1996 Artists Rights Society (ARS),N.Y./ADAGP, Paris.
