For years, the issue of the handover has spurred incessant talk
of foreign passports and the future of Hong Kong. People are
constantly asked what choice they have made: whether it is to
stay in Hong Kong or to emigrate overseas. I am often asked
these questions as well.
My concert performances and movie shootings have taken me around
the world several times. I have been to many countries in
Europe, the Americas and Southeast Asia. There is no denying
that I am deeply enchanted by the classical buildings and
romantic atmosphere of France and Italy. The Oriental mysticism
of Egypt and India captures my imagination, and I enjoy very
much the carefree lifestyle in the United States and Canada. But
at the end of the day, Hong Kong is where I feel most in my
element. Perhaps it is because Hong Kong is where I grew up,
where I built my career, from a television actor apprentice. I
acted in soap operas, then in movies. And I started singing on
stage and making records. Hong Kong is where I struggled and
acquired indelible memories. Although it is small and crowded,
Hong Kong has given me the space I need for artistic
development. It is where I feel at home.
