THE EARLY DAYS: The sugary sounds of a new breed of singers from
Taiwan take Hong Kong by storm. Among them is Yau Nga, who drips
with alluring sentimentality in love songs like "Raindrop Tears"
and "Where Do the Winds Come From?" Hong Kong's own pop stars
begin to make names for themselves, too, often through TV
appearances on Enjoy Yourself Tonight, a popular weekly variety
show. One of the local lights is Lisa Wang, a versatile singer,
dancer and actress who later was selected by China as a Hong
Kong representative to the National People's Congress. More and
more, Chinese music dominates the colony's pop scene: when the
Beatles perform at Prince's Theater in July 1964, the show
doesn't even sell out.
