And is the clock to be turned back on that moment now? Maybe for
a bit, but surely not for long. Can you govern Hong Kong well
against the grain of public sentiment and aspiration? Can you
deny people what they've been promised? Can you sell them
counterfeit goods when they've experienced the real thing? Can
you take away for good what is the best guarantee of Hong Kong's
much promised autonomy, its decency and its stability?
Hong Kong is a great city. Sensible. Prosperous. Spirited. Free.
Can it really be other than that as this century folds into the
next?
