Exploring an interactive world
ADI IGNATIUS, Editor, TIME Interactive
Welcome to a unique issue of TIME: An interactive look at, well, interactivity. The project originated several months ago, after the collapse of the dotcom bubble, as we set out to investigate the various much-hyped technologies that promise to enhance how people interact. We were curious to see which among them had staying power and could truly improve how we live and interrelate. The result is this report: a skeptic's adventure through the new world of interactive innovations.
To exploit the idea to its fullest, we are providing links throughout the magazine to special content on our website, timeinteractive.com. Just type in the Web-page address that's listed at the end of many of the articles. These will take you deep inside our website: to special polls, videos, sound files and more. Find out how our correspondent fared in his date with a jarringly lifelike interactive mate. Chat online with the virtual veejay who stars on MTV Asia. And check out our pick for the best website you (probably) never heard of.
This issue also is about connecting with readers. For weeks we have solicited suggestions from all of you for this issue. We received hundreds of replies, some of which we feature in this week's report. We also invited one respondent, Clinton Keet, a South African teacher working in Taipei, to visit our offices to help produce the magazine.
This has truly been a team effort, and while it's impossible to list everyone involved, kudos goes to senior editor Susan Hornik for bringing the issue to life and to the new media team of Dan Erck, Adam Connors, Nick Papadopoulos and Dennis Wong for producing a dazzling interactive website. This also is a joint effort with our partner CNN International, which is broadcasting its own special programming on interactivity all this week. Enjoy the issue. And be sure to send us feedback: we take this interactive stuff seriously.
