Signs Of Decline
ow, one year after the region's economies hit an iceberg, is a
good time to assess the damage. Here are two indicators of how
bad it has been and how bad it is likely to become:
PC SALES STALL
Outide of Hong Kong and Taiwan, PC factory shipments have
plummeted. It's an obvious indicator that Asian individuals and
businesses have less money to spend and invest. But since PCs
improve productivity, the deline could also foreshadow lower
profitablity.

Weakness in local currencies has put a much higher price tag on a
U.S. education--especially for families in Indonesia. U.S.
colleges have responded by permitting international students to
hold jobs while they attend school.
