Besides, some in Washington point out, space travel isn't all that expensive. NASA funding represents less than 1% of the federal budget--a fraction of the 6% it got in the giddy Apollo days. The problem is that the balance sheet must now include Challenger and Columbia--not to mention the 14 lives the lost ships claimed.
