Although countries from France to Singapore have accepted national IDs, the U.S. remains resistant. Never mind that daily movements and decisions are already quite traceable, thanks to Social Security numbers, credit cards, cell phones and toll-booth smart cards. Never mind that 6 out of 10 Americans have been fingerprinted for one reason or another and that 13 states have biometric requirements (like fingerprints) for getting driver's licenses.
