Gail Silberstein, an attorney in Newton, Mass., started rowing when her daughters did in eighth and ninth grades. Now the girls are off at college, but many a dawn finds their 50-year-old mother sculling down the Charles, gliding past leafy shores busy with wildlife. "I never would have found this," she says, "if my kids hadn't shown me the way."
