DIED. Hank Bauer, 84, gruff former U.S. Marine and linchpin for the New York Yankees during the team's run of nine pennants and seven World Series from 1949 to 1959; in Shawnee Mission, Kans. The hard-nosed slugger won two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for heroism during World War II. As a player, he set a Series record by hitting safely in 17 consecutive games. He later managed the Baltimore Orioles to their first Series title, in a memorable upset over the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1966. The two-time American League manager of the year said, "It's no fun playing if you don't make somebody else unhappy. I do everything hard."
