SENTENCED. LARRY NEVERS, 53, and WALTER BUDZYN, 47, white former police officers; for their second-degree murder convictions in the beating death of black motorist Malice Green; in Detroit. Green died of injuries from hammer- like blows delivered by heavy metal flashlights. The two officers apologized to Green's family before Judge George Crockett handed down their punishments -- 12 to 25 years in prison for Nevers, who cannot be paroled before he has served at least nine years and eight months; and eight to 18 years for Budzyn, or a minimum of 6 1/2 years. The officers requested that they be imprisoned out of state to avoid cellblock encounters with inmates they sent to prison in the course of their police work.
