Danger: Walking While Working.
(2 of 2)
10:46 a.m. Discover I can sign for packages and open the ones from DHL (but not UPS). I can meet with an editor to discuss ideas, using for emphasis Zorba the Greek dance (works well) and Andy Samberg impression (not so much). Interviewing's a bust: subject asks if I'm vacuuming.
12:16 p.m. E-mailing while walking: bingo.
12:49 p.m. Read newspaper. Crank desk up to heady top speed of 2 m.p.h. This is the optimum velocity, the literature says, because you are moving but you won't break a sweat. I'm cruising!
12:54 p.m. Fall off. Decide it might be nice to sit for lunch.
2:23 p.m. It's not that I didn't want to come back to work. It's just my glutes that didn't.
2:40 p.m. Invite an editor to hold weekly meeting in my office. She declines. Never mind. One secret upside of the Walkstation: you enjoy long sedentary meetings.
4:14 p.m. Veering off track. Resisting the urge to Google Are we there yet? No longer quite so friendly to drop-bys. ("Yes, it's a treadmill." "Not that difficult, but I'm a practiced walker." "I am working.")
Later that day: When I get home, I really feel as if I've done a day's labor. It's not just that my mind is weary. My whole body is. Very satisfying. Bonus: too tired to tidy up.
Wednesday
9:35 a.m. Notice a little chafing on my elbow from steadying myself to read. Mouse manipulation also an issue. Print when I want to delete. Delete paragraph instead of a word. Send wrong e-mail.
10:07 a.m. Learn that when you are having computer issues, you cannot simply walk them off.
Rest of day: Find a lot of reasons to be out of the office.
Thursday
9:37 a.m. Now for the fun part: writing.
9:42 a.m. Ummmm ...
10:12 a.m. Silence.
10:32 a.m. Who knew? Antipathy toward writing is enhanced by antipathy toward exercise.
10:45 a.m. Recall that Steelcase doesn't recommend spending the entire day walking. Company also delivered chair. Must. Not. Be. Tempted.
11:45 a.m. Deadline looms. Retreat to old desk to write. Maybe you can do it all, but you can't do it all at once.
